We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.

After 18 months back in New York, with my own efforts increasingly drawn to genealogical research and the development of local history, both related to but different from archaeology, it seems an appropriate time to to occasionally share some thoughts and so this blog. The title is especially appropriate since, of course, I am in NYC, but moreover because I am becoming increasingly involved in New York City history and peoples. At the start of this new year, I will begin the development of another biography for the German Historical Institute, one that again both involves a New York figure and a new century to consider. The earlier bio, on Adoph Ochs, will appear on their web site this January and the URL will be posted on my own web site, under publications. My ancestors, located in the New Bedford, MA area will continue to figure strongly in much of what I study. And, of course, as with Qatar, I will post photos and comments on interesting travel - soon my recent trip to Peru will be a feature. Future trips to Qatar, as an evaluator for an Arabic-English Digital Library, will appear there.
